Brussels, September 2017: Call for abstracts and abstract submission

The meeeting seeks to assess the current issues and key knowledge gaps of land-use in the climate system. We invite contributions (oral or poster presentations) that explore open questions related to land-use change in the broader climate system, specifically focusing on regional to global scale aspects. The following broader themes will be covered:

  • Bioenergy, afforestation and more: land-based climate mitigation potential and climate system response

The land system can play an important role in helping stabilise climate at low levels by reducing and offsetting anthropogenic emissions. However, there is considerable variation in the estimated potential in terms of amount and timing of negative emissions and associated effects such as land-use emissions. This needs to be considered in the context of how the climate and earth system will respond to negative emissions. We welcome studies that address these issues with climate and integrated assessment models, or observation approaches.

  • Trade-offs and co-benefits

Land-based climate change mitigation will have knock-on effects on socioeconomic processes and important ecosystem services beyond climate regulation. This session asks for contributions that assess impacts on ecosystem services or biodiversity that arise from land-based climate mitigation, including socioeconomic perspectives. This includes trade-offs between land carbon storage through large-scale biofuel expansion and/or reforestation/afforestation and impacts on freshwater resources, food productivity and security, biodiversity, non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, and human health.

  • Biophysical effects of LUC on climate: state-of-the science, and ways forward in support of climate adaptation and mitigation policies

Despite the increasing evidences of the biophysical effects of land-use change on climate, to date these processes are not accounted in climate mitigation and adaptation policies. Robust assessments and practical implementation tools have to be developed in order to streamline biophysical processes into land-based climate mitigation and adaptation plans. The scope of the session is to review the state-of the science in the assessment of biophysical land-use change impacts on the local and global climate (i.e. temperature, precipitation and surface energy balance). The session is open to contributions based on land-climate models or surface/satellite observations, and to assessment based on the fusion of data and models. Particular emphasis will be given to contributions on novel methodologies and tools that may support the accounting of these processes in land-based mitigation strategies.

  • New approaches to model land-use change

The management and use of land provides many opportunities for climate mitigation and adaptation. However, evaluating the large-scale possibilities of these options and their feasibility within the larger land-use context requires novel approaches to land change modelling. This session asks for contributions that present advances and innovations in land-use change modelling relevant to the assessment of climate mitigation and adaptations.


Abstract submissions are now invited to contribute to the workshop, addressing the above topics with modelling or observational studies. These should cover the regional-global scope as indicated above.

Abstracts are limited to 300 words. Participation in the workshop is limited to 70 participants, and abstracts will be selected based on the novelty of the method or results and match to the session objectives.

Deadline for abstract submission: 25 June 2017, Participants will be notified by mid July. Costs of the meeting room, coffee and lunch will be covered, participants are expected to pay own travel and hotel costs.
